1.Vice Admiral Manish Honwad Appointed Director and Commandant of AFMC Pune
Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad, VSM, has taken charge as the new Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.
Educational Background
Vice Admiral Honwad is an alumnus of AFMC. He completed his MBBS in 1989 and later obtained an MD in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine in 1998 from the same institution.
He also holds a WHO Fellowship in Neuro-Anesthesiology from NIMHANS, Bengaluru. In addition, he completed an M.Phil in Public Administration from the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi.
Previous Experience
With more than 37 years of service, he has held several academic, clinical and administrative positions.
His earlier assignments include:

2. India and Denmark Strengthen Cooperation in MSME Development and Innovation
India and Denmark have renewed their commitment to cooperation in MSME development, innovation and intellectual property rights (IPR).
The two countries held the 4th India–Denmark Joint Working Group (JWG) Meeting involving India’s Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the Danish Patent and Trademark Office (DKPTO).
The meeting was held in Copenhagen from 24 to 28 August 2026.
Key Areas of Discussion
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation and sharing experiences in areas related to MSMEs and innovation.

- Technology commercialisation
- Entrepreneurship
- Cluster-based MSME development

During the programme, the Indian delegation visited Aarhus University Innovation “Kitchen” and Agro Food Park.
The visits provided insights into Denmark’s approach to innovation support, start-up mentoring, industry–academia cooperation and business clusters.
The delegation also discussed business development, innovation and the SME ecosystem with the Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs.
Dr. Rajneesh participated in the Nordic–India Startup Summit 2026, organised by TechBBQ. The summit brought together stakeholders from the Nordic start-up and innovation ecosystem.

3.Indian Railways Approves ₹233 Crore for Electronic Interlocking at 21 Stations
Indian Railways has approved ₹233 crore to install Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems at 21 railway stations in the Samastipur Division of East Central Railway.
Modernising Railway Signalling
The project will replace existing Panel Interlocking systems with modern Electronic Interlocking technology.
The upgraded system is expected to improve the reliability and efficiency of railway signalling. It will also support the implementation of Kavach, India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.
Improving Railway Safety
Electronic Interlocking is a computer-based signalling system that helps improve the reliability and efficiency of railway operations.
Compared with older relay-based systems, it provides several advantages:
- Faster fault diagnosis
- Easier maintenance
- Greater reliability
- Better operational flexibility
The project is therefore part of Indian Railways’ wider effort to modernise signalling systems and improve railway safety.
4.Indian Railways Approves ₹272 Crore Bypass Line Between Adra and Joychandipahar
Indian Railways has approved ₹272 crore for an 11-km bypass railway line between Adra and Joychandipahar in the South Eastern Railway zone.
Boost to Freight Transportation
The new Adra–Joychandipahar–Sanka bypass will provide a dedicated route and a bi-directional connection to the upcoming third railway line.
The line is expected to support the movement of around 6.065 freight rakes per day and help meet growing industrial freight demand.
The project will particularly support freight requirements linked to:
- SAIL: 23.40 MTPA iron ore demand
- BCCL: Projected requirement of 45 freight rakes per day
The bypass is expected to improve freight movement and support industrial activity in the region.
5.Indian Railways Approves ₹170 Crore for Kavach 4.0 in Moradabad Division
Indian Railways has approved ₹170 crore to deploy Kavach Version 4.0 across the remaining 712 Route Kilometres (Rkm) of the Moradabad Division of Northern Railway.
Strengthening Railway Safety
Kavach is India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.
It is designed to improve train safety by helping prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD). The system can also apply brakes automatically when required.
Furthermore, Kavach can help regulate train speed during critical situations and reduce the risk of train collisions.
Expansion of Kavach 4.0
The deployment of Kavach 4.0 will provide an additional safety layer across the remaining sections of the Moradabad Division.
The project is part of Indian Railways’ wider plan to modernise signalling and expand indigenous train-protection technology across the country.
6.India’s Real GDP Growth Reaches 7.8% in Q1 FY 2026–27
India recorded 7.8% real GDP growth in the first quarter of FY 2026–27.
The strong performance was supported by domestic demand, manufacturing, services, investment and exports.
At the same time, real GVA growth reached 8.2% during the quarter.
Strong Q1 Economic Performance
Real GDP at constant prices stood at ₹81.36 lakh crore in Q1 FY 2026–27.
This represented 7.8% growth, compared with 6.9% in the corresponding quarter of FY 2025–26.
Nominal GDP at current prices stood at ₹88.27 lakh crore, recording 10.3% growth compared with 8.1% a year earlier.
The Q1 real GDP growth was also higher than the RBI estimate of 7.0%.
Investment, Consumption and Exports
Investment played an important role in the economic expansion.
Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) grew by 11.9%, compared with 5.8% in Q1 FY 2025–26.
Household consumption, measured through Private Final Consumption Expenditure (PFCE), increased by 7.1%.
Exports also performed well, recording 12.0% growth during the quarter.
Manufacturing and Services
Growth remained broad-based across major sectors.
The tertiary sector recorded 10.0% real GVA growth in Q1 FY 2026–27, compared with 8.0% a year earlier.
Financial, real estate, IT and professional services grew by 12.1%.
The secondary sector expanded by 8.6%, compared with 6.1% in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
Manufacturing output increased by 9.2%, while capital goods production grew by 15.2%.
Infrastructure and construction goods recorded 7.2% growth.
Economic Momentum Continues
The positive economic trend continued into July 2026.
Industrial production grew by 6.7% in July, while cumulative industrial production during April–July 2026–27 increased by 6.3%.
India’s combined merchandise and services exports reached an estimated US$80.14 billion in July 2026, registering 13.31% year-on-year growth.
During April–July 2026, cumulative exports reached US$316.42 billion, showing 13.16% growth.
Bank credit growth during July 2026 stood at:
- Agriculture and allied activities – 17.0%
- Industry – 20.0%
- Services – 22.9%
GDP Estimates Revised Upward
The revised estimates improved India’s recent growth picture:
- 2023–24: 7.2% to 7.3%
- 2024–25: 7.1% to 7.2%
- 2025–26: 7.7% to 7.8%
The revisions used updated price and production indices based on the 2022–23 base year, along with updated administrative data.

7.India and Germany Strengthen Cooperation on Environment and Climate Action
India and Germany have renewed their commitment to cooperation in environmental protection, climate action, biodiversity and resource efficiency.
The discussions took place during the 4th Indo-German Environment Forum (IGEF) in New Delhi.
4th Indo-German Environment Forum
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav co-chaired the forum with German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider.
India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) organised the forum.
The theme of the 4th IGEF was “Together For More Resilience.”
Focus on Climate Resilience
The discussions covered major environmental challenges, including:
- Climate change
- Biodiversity loss
- Pollution
- Resource depletion
Bhupender Yadav stressed the need for coordinated international action to address these challenges.
He also highlighted India’s development experience and noted that economic growth and environmental sustainability can progress together.
India has been achieving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitments ahead of schedule.
Circular Economy and Green Transition
The Union Minister highlighted the economic potential of resource efficiency and the circular economy.
India’s circular economy could potentially create a market worth more than US$2 trillion and nearly 10 million jobs by 2050.
He also stressed the need to reduce carbon emissions from energy-intensive sectors such as:
- Steel
- Cement
- Chemicals
Cleaner energy, innovation, resource efficiency and new production technologies can support this transition.
8.CAQM Reviews Air Pollution Enforcement Across NCR
The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) reviewed air pollution enforcement measures across the National Capital Region.
The review took place during the 138th meeting of the Enforcement Task Force (ETF) on 31 August 2026.
Sector-wise Inspections
The review covered the period from 8 August to 23 August 2026.
During this period, CAQM Flying Squads conducted 121 inspections across key pollution-sensitive sectors.
These included:
- 10 inspections at Construction and Demolition (C&D) sites
- 56 inspections in the industrial sector
- 20 inspections of Diesel Generator (DG) sets
Based on reported violations, authorities proposed:
- Closure of 4 C&D projects/industries
- Sealing of 17 DG sets
- 7 compliance directions
- Environmental Compensation (EC) in 5 cases
Compliance and Resumption Orders
The Enforcement Task Force also reviewed action taken after its 137th meeting.
It noted that all actionable cases involving industries, C&D activities and DG sets had been addressed.
After verifying compliance, authorities issued 9 resumption orders.
These included:
- 2 industrial units
- 7 C&D projects
State-wise, the resumption orders included:
- Delhi – 1
- Haryana – 6
- Uttar Pradesh – 2
Cumulative Enforcement Status
As of 31 August 2026, CAQM Flying Squads had conducted inspections at 28,397 units, projects and entities across the NCR.
9.PM’s Advisor Tarun Kapoor Reviews BCCL Operations and Key Projects in Dhanbad
Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the Prime Minister, conducted a high-level review of the operations, projects and future plans of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).
He visited Dhanbad and nearby areas during a two-day visit from 31 August to 1 September 2026.
The review meeting took place at Koyla Bhawan, the headquarters of BCCL.
Focus on Production and Modern Mining
The meeting covered:
- Coal production and offtake
- Coal reserves
- Operational capacity
- Production targets up to 2030–31
- Underground mines
- Opencast mines
- Overburden removal
The meeting also reviewed modern mining technologies such as Longwall Mining and Highwall Mining.
Plans to expand the use of Surface Miners and Continuous Miners were also discussed.
Jharia Coalfield and Coking Coal
The review included restructuring of opencast blocks in the Jharia Coalfield.
Officials also discussed redevelopment of discontinued mines through the MDO/Revenue Sharing model.
Tarun Kapoor highlighted BCCL’s strategic role in meeting India’s coking coal requirements.
He called for scientific and efficient use of coal resources, capacity expansion and better operational efficiency.
10.Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja Appointed 47th DGAFMS
Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja assumed charge as the 47th Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) on 1 September 2026.
Role of DGAFMS
As DGAFMS, he will oversee medical support for India’s Armed Forces.
