Project Rhino Initiative strengthens species conservation
The Project Rhino Initiative was highlighted by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on World Rhino Day. He praised conservation efforts for the greater one-horned rhinoceros and announced support for range states through financial and technical assistance.
The Prime Minister noted that Assam holds nearly 80% of the world’s rhino population. He also highlighted the efforts of Kaziranga to combat rhino poaching, which have received extensive appreciation.
Rhino populations have also shown progress in other regions. The species has returned or remains protected in parts of Bihar and West Bengal. Meanwhile, rhino reintroduction efforts in Dudhwa, Uttar Pradesh, are creating a significant conservation milestone.
Support for rhino conservation
The initiative will support range states in four major areas: protection, habitat management, genetic improvement and understanding population dynamics. These areas are important for strengthening long-term species conservation and wildlife management.
The announcement also reflects the role of state-level conservation efforts in protecting the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Kaziranga’s anti-poaching work and the reintroduction programme at Dudhwa demonstrate different approaches to species management.
On World Rhino Day, the Prime Minister also acknowledged people working at the forefront of rhino protection. He linked continued conservation efforts with India’s broader commitment to animal protection and active wildlife management.
The Project Rhino Initiative is therefore focused on providing range states with financial and technical support to strengthen rhino protection. Its areas of intervention include habitat management, genetic improvement and population studies. These measures can support more systematic conservation planning for the species across its range states.
