NHRC Commission Meeting Focuses on Human Rights Cooperation
NHRC Commission Meeting strengthens coordination
The NHRC Commission Meeting was held in New Delhi with representatives of all seven deemed members of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The meeting focused on stronger coordination among statutory commissions for protecting human rights.
NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian stressed collaborative functioning. He suggested appointing a Nodal Officer to coordinate activities among the National Commissions. He also said the NHRC could explore supporting commissions that lack adequate investigation machinery.
The meeting highlighted concerns affecting vulnerable groups. These included rehabilitation of mentally ill women engaged in begging, social security for persons with disabilities (PwDs), and denial of insurance coverage to PwDs.
Participants discussed joint fact-finding, research, awareness campaigns and outreach programmes. They also sought better coordination to reduce duplication of cases and strengthen grievance redressal.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya K. Rahatkar outlined initiatives related to women’s rights, public hearings, research and anti-human trafficking campaigns. NCBC Member Kiran Umesh Mahalle raised concerns about mentally ill women from begging communities and suggested rehabilitation measures.
The Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities stressed research into welfare gaps. Meanwhile, NCPCR Member Secretary Dr. Sanjeev Sharma highlighted rescue and rehabilitation efforts involving more than 8,000 children and called for stronger action against child sexual abuse material online.
The NCSC highlighted its e-grievance monitoring portal, while the National Commission stressed electronic grievance systems and interfaith dialogue. The NCST called for real-time grievance tracking and early-warning mechanisms.
NHRC will also conduct monthly training for investigation officers from 30 September 2026, scheduled for the last Wednesday of each month. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to coordinated human rights protection.
