India Climate Action: Renewable Energy and Clean Growth
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. India Climate Action, he said, combines development with environmental sustainability.
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s renewable-energy expansion and progress on COP-21 commitments. Among G-20 members, he stated that India is the only country to have met its Paris commitments ahead of schedule. Solar capacity has risen from 2 GW about 12 years ago to more than 160 GW.
Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, over 50 lakh homes have received solarisation support, with assistance of up to ₹80,000 per household. About 30 lakh farmers have received solar pumps under Kusum Yojana. The One Nation-One Grid project has helped prevent 200 million tonnes of carbon emissions.
India has also expanded clean mobility. The country launched its first hydrogen train, described as the world’s longest. Electric vehicle sales reached about 25 lakh last year. Metro networks now operate in more than 20 cities, while railway electrification and the 3,000-km Dedicated Freight Corridor support cleaner freight movement.
India Climate Action: Water, Farming and Forests
Water conservation remains another focus. More than 70,000 Amrit Sarovars and 1.5 crore rainwater-harvesting structures have been created. Efficient irrigation practices support over 2 crore farmers. Millet production and exports have also expanded, while natural farming clusters cover 12.5 lakh hectares.
He highlighted 3,000 climate-resilient crop varieties, agro-forestry and a reported 22% increase in very dense forest cover over 12 years. Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Catch the Rain encourage wider public participation.
India Climate Action also includes efforts against plastic pollution and waste. The government is promoting a circular economy and Gobardhan Yojana, which converts organic waste into useful resources. The Prime Minister said these initiatives support a responsible and sustainable future.
