India Seychelles Relations: Parliamentary Cooperation and 50 Years of Diplomatic Ties
India Seychelles Relations entered a significant milestone in 2026 as the two countries marked 50 years of diplomatic ties. Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan met a parliamentary delegation from Seychelles led by Azarel Ernesta, Speaker of the National Assembly, at Parliament House, New Delhi. The meeting focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation and expanding bilateral relations.
India Seychelles Relations and Parliamentary Cooperation
Vice-President Radhakrishnan congratulated Azarel Ernesta on becoming the first woman Speaker of the Seychelles National Assembly. He also recalled her participation in the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), held in New Delhi in January 2026.
The year 2026 is important for both nations. India and Seychelles are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations, while Seychelles is also marking the 50th anniversary of its Independence.
Moreover, high-level engagement has increased during the year. Seychelles President Patrick Herminie undertook a State Visit to India in February 2026, further strengthening bilateral ties.
Development and Maritime Cooperation
India announced a USD 175 million Special Economic Package for Seychelles. It includes a USD 125 million Line of Credit and USD 50 million in grant assistance.
The package aims to support Seychelles in areas such as development, capacity building and maritime security. Therefore, cooperation between the two countries extends beyond parliamentary relations.
Digital Parliament and Capacity Building
During the meeting, India highlighted its parliamentary digitisation initiatives. These include paperless functioning, multilingual translation, digital archives and cybersecurity capabilities.
India also offered to share its parliamentary experience with Seychelles through study visits and customised training programmes.
People-to-People Relations
The meeting also highlighted the role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening bilateral relations. Gujarati and Tamil communities in Seychelles have contributed to cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
