SEMICON India 2026 Inaugurated in New Delhi
SEMICON India 2026 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on 17 September 2026. The fifth edition highlights India’s semiconductor ecosystem and opportunities for innovation, investment and growth.
SEMICON India 2026 and Semiconductor Expansion
The Prime Minister linked the event with Vishwakarma Jayanti, connecting India’s tradition of creation with advanced technology.
The Prime Minister highlighted several recent developments, including 7.8% quarterly GDP growth and the operationalisation of a 3,000-kilometre Dedicated Freight Corridor. He also referred to India’s sovereign rating upgrade and the New Delhi Declaration adopted at the BRICS Summit.
Tracing the semiconductor programme’s journey from policy planning in 2022, he outlined its progress through pilot lines to commercial production.
Chips from Indian facilities have begun reaching customers, while commercial production has started at plants in Mohali and Surat.
The second phase of the Semiconductor Mission has an announced outlay of $13.5 billion. The Prime Minister highlighted reforms supporting collaboration among international companies, startups and design firms.
Building a Complete Semiconductor Ecosystem
India is focusing on fabless companies, intellectual property, silicon photonics and supply chains for equipment, chemicals, gases and materials. Twelve approved projects are supporting the ecosystem.
Skilling is another focus. The government aims to train one lakh engineering students in chip design, with 70,000 already trained. The Prime Minister urged researchers in India and abroad to contribute to advanced technology, and called on industry leaders to strengthen domestic R&D.
AI is changing semiconductor requirements, increasing attention to system integration, memory placement and heat management. Energy security is important for AI data centres and semiconductor plants. India has crossed 160 GW of solar capacity and is pursuing nuclear energy participation and small modular reactors.
The Prime Minister said SEMICON India 2026 is preparing India to become a preferred semiconductor manufacturing destination as global demand grows.
