BRICS IP Offices Meeting 2026
The 18th Meeting of the Heads of Intellectual Property (IP) Offices of BRICS countries took place in New Delhi from September 1 to 3, 2026. The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (O/o CGPDTM) hosted the meeting under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
Around 35 delegates joined the meeting through physical and virtual modes. Representatives from Russia, Iran and Ethiopia participated virtually. Meanwhile, delegates from the other BRICS member countries attended the meeting in person.
The discussions primarily focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation in intellectual property. In addition, the delegates explored ways to promote innovation, creativity, technological resilience and sustainable economic development across BRICS countries.
Key Outcomes of the BRICS IP Meeting
Importantly, the participating countries adopted the Updated Operational Guidelines for IP BRICS as a major outcome of the meeting. These guidelines seek to make cooperation more result-oriented. Moreover, they aim to facilitate cross-border innovation and encourage joint efforts towards global intellectual property standards.
The delegates also examined the protection of traditional knowledge and traditional systems of medicine. Furthermore, they reviewed progress under the study on Reinforced Patent Examination Cooperation in BRICS. This initiative seeks to streamline patent examination, reduce backlogs and improve the exchange of search results among member countries.
New Initiatives Discussed
Additionally, the meeting considered several new initiatives to strengthen intellectual property cooperation. These included:
- BRICS Intellectual Property Awareness Series
- IP BRICS FinTech Innovation Monitor
- BRICS Industrial Property Commercialisation Forum and Best Practices Repository
- Research on Design Systems of BRICS
Together, these initiatives can improve IP awareness, support innovation and promote the commercialisation of intellectual property. They can also encourage greater knowledge-sharing among BRICS member countries.

Meanwhile, India’s BRICS 2026 Chairship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” guided the discussions.
Overall, the meeting highlighted the growing importance of intellectual property cooperation in supporting innovation-driven economic growth. It also underlined the need for stronger international collaboration to address emerging technological challenges.
